Microsoft XP Patch MS06-015 (908531) released 18-04-06

The above patch is causing problems if installed on a PC with HP's Share-to-Web software installed.

Such symptoms are: word freezing on ‘save as’, no access to ‘my documents’, internet explorer not starting up etc

There have been reported issues where software that was previously distributed by Hewlett Packard (HP) causes the Verclsid.exe program to stop responding. The specific component that causes problems is the Share-to-Web namespace daemon (Hpgs2wnd.exe). This software is no longer distributed by HP, but was previously included with the following items:

HP PhotoSmart software

Any HP DeskJet printer that includes a card reader

HP scanners

Some HP CD-RWs and HP DVD-RWs

HP cameras

The Share-to-Web namespace daemon can be found in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Hewlett-packard\Hp share-to-web\Hpgs2wnd.exe

Share-to-Web software is automatically started when you start the computer. The software may also be started on the Start menu.

The Microsoft article on the problem is here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

A simple auto-patch file can be downloaded from here

NOTE - this is a VBS script that will change some registry keys as-per the MS article, simply click on this link and either save for later use ...or click 'OPEN' and run it direct from the web - you will get a simple 'Done' screen when finished - reboot and all should be ok again.
