BT ADSL Router info

The standard ADSL router supplied by BT is the 5861 black box with 4 port hub built in.

This is normally shipped in a ‘NAT’ config with the following settings…

IP address             192.168.254.254

Subnet mask             255.255.255.0

This box will act as a DHCP server and also will proxy DNS i.e. if you need to manually configure your clients IP settings, just point DNS at 192.168.254.254.

To open the logon page simply http://192.168.245.245

In a ‘No NAT’ config you should http to the IP of the router (given to you by the ISP), also your DNS settings should point directly to your internal DNS or your ISP’s DNS.

FAULTS – Normally found straight after BT install

1) The router should be set to ‘No NAT’ with a fixed IP address but I can still ping it on 192.168.254.254 and not on the address given by my ISP.

http://192.168.245.245

and logon as…

startup_user@startup_domain

password = ADSL

You should get ‘Connected’ showing in the status box.

Now wait for up to 30 minutes and the router should download its new config, if it doesn’t, then phone your ISP.

2) I can ping the router on 192.168.254.254 but can’t http to the logon screen.

Check your proxy settings in IE – Remove any settings for testing.

Check that you don’t have MS proxy client installed – look for ‘WSP client’ in control panel.

Phone your ISP – BT have got the config wrong!
